Concern for the environment

The modern Greek is pessimistic about the policy pursued for the protection of the environment

The modern Greek is pessimistic about the policy pursued for the protection of the environment, according to a pan-Hellenic poll conducted by the ISTAME-Andreas Papandreou Foundation in view of the 5th of June, World Environment Day.

The research shows that the Greeks are informed about the environment mainly through television. They consider the destruction of forests to be the most important environmental problem, they are convinced that man and his activities are responsible for the phenomenon of climate change. When asked about the daily things that a citizen can do by contributing to the protection of the environment, it is found that when daily action has a financial exchange value for the household (saving water and energy at home), then the frequency of actions increases.

Citizens seem to be very annoyed by actions that systematically pollute the environment and believe that this action should be stopped regardless of whether it also has a negative impact on employees. They are also said to be willing to pay a limited environmental resource, in order to raise the necessary capital for the formation of a free space in a municipality.

Finally, Greeks seem willing to limit the use of their cars by choosing as a first priority the condensation of public transport and the reduction of the ticket price, while in the matter of waste, they would accept a landfill, as long as the necessary environmental protection studies.

Meanwhile, in view of June 5, events are being prepared in the capital. The Local Union of Municipalities and Communities of the Prefecture of Attica (T.E.D.K.N.A.), the Municipality of Athens and the Unified Association of Municipalities and Communities of the Prefecture of Attica (Ε.Σ.Δ.Κ.Ν.Α.) organize event for the celebration of the World Environment Day on Tuesday 5 June at 19.30 in Syntagma Square. As part of this event, which aims to raise public awareness about the protection of the environment and the importance of recycling, the Greek Music Workshop of the Municipality of Athens will give a concert with Greek music under the direction of Christos Chalkias.

At the same time, on Tuesday afternoon, GSEE has planned a mobilization demanding the free access of the people to the beaches. The pre-assembly will take place at the pillars of Olympian Zeus at 18:30.
