North Korea: Launches eight ballistic missiles

North Korea has fired eight ballistic missiles in retaliation for the development of close ties between the United States and South Korea. Fears of a nuclear test.

North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang region eastward following a visit by a U.S. government special envoy to South Korea and a day after the completion of three days of joint US military exercises.

"Our armed forces have detected the launch of eight short-range ballistic missiles from the Sunan area in Pyongyang in the direction of the East Sea," the South Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The launches took place in about thirty minutes , he clarified.

"Our military has stepped up its monitoring and vigilance in view of new launches. "South Korea and the United States are working closely together and are fully prepared . "

The new launches came after three days of joint US and South Korean military exercises involving USS Ronald Reagan, a 100,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.

It was the first joint military exercise between the two countries since South Korea's new president, Yoon Sok-gel, took office in early May . The new Conservative president has announced that he will pursue a tougher policy towards Pyongyang.

It is the first time that an American aircraft carrier has participated in joint high schools since November 2017.

North Korea has been protesting for years against high schools of this kind, which are characterized by attempts to invade its territory.

The high schools "strengthened the two countries' determination to respond vigorously to any North Korean provocation" and "demonstrated the US commitment" to a "comprehensive deterrent," the South Korean military said in a statement.

According to Go Myung-hean, a researcher at the Asan Institute for Political Studies, the unusually large number of missiles fired by North Korea this time around seems to be a retaliation for high schools .

"It looks like they fired eight rockets because from their own point of view, the scale of the joint high schools has grown ," he told AFP.

Last month, following a meeting in Seoul with President Yoon, US President Joe Biden assured that Washington would develop "strategic means" if necessary to deter North Korea .

Hours after Biden's tour of the region ended, Kim Jong Un 's regime tested three missiles, including a Hwasong-17, which is considered the largest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in its arsenal.

Washington and Seoul have been warning for several weeks that Pyongyang may soon proceed with the seventh nuclear test in its history, the first in five years.

North Korea, despite being hit by a wave of the new coronavirus pandemic, has resumed construction of a long-defunct nuclear reactor , according to satellite images.

The South Korean presidency says Pyongyang has launched a detonator test in preparation for a new nuclear test.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had declared a moratorium on intercontinental ballistic missile launches (ICBMs) and nuclear weapons tests in 2017, as he held talks with then-US President Donald Trump. But those talks ended in failure in 2019.

North Korea partially ended the moratorium in March by launching an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Some analysts believe that Pyongyang may step up its armaments program by conducting nuclear weapons tests to divert the North Korean population from the pandemic. In the country of 25 million inhabitants, the limit of 4 million possible cases was exceeded yesterday, Saturday, according to the official data - which are considered underestimated.
